Katelios Group Conservation Project of Caretta caretta Marine Turtles (GREECE)

The Katelios Group was founded in 1994 and consists mainly of local people with an interest in the long-term future of the Islandof Kefalonia. The Group is concerned with researching and protecting the dramatically declining physical environment and aims through its activities to find solutions to local environmental problems and to promote sustainable development, by working with interested organisations and individuals. The Group has experience in developing and running externally funded projects and currently runs one European Voluntary Service Project, (which are funded by the European Commission and the General Secretary of Youth (Ministry of Education) Greece) The “Kefalonian Conservation Project” – concerning the research and protection of marine turtles, Caretta caretta, on the nesting beaches of Kefalonia andthepromotionof sustainable tourism.

The Group also runs an Environment and Culture Centre that displays environmental information, which is used for holding meetings, presentations as well as evening classes. The Group has experience in developing and running: 1, presentation programs and festivals, in order to raise public awareness; 2, education programs and projects (for both children and adults) and 3, developing and undertaking scientific research projects.

Our purposes:

-To develop relationships between participating nations by collaborative working towards a common environmental purpose;
-To develop a Master Plan for the protection of the marine turtle nesting population of Mounda beach (the main nesting beach of C. caretta on Kefalonia);
-To study and undertake behavioral observations of the activities of the marine turtles on nesting beaches;
-To develop an Environmental Education Program
-To promote Sustainable Development principles,
-To develop new employment through Eco-tourism;
-To support local environmentally friendly initiatives


The activities of the Group:
-Katelios Environmental Centre
-The research and protection of the marine turtles C.caretta
-The promotion of sustainable tourism and public awareness


Volunteer’s tasks:

-Protection of the marine turtles
-Research and behavior observation of C. caretta
-Nightly observation of the female C. caretta aiming at:
-Measuring the time of laying the eggs
-Counting the eggs
-Visual check-up of C. caretta
-Checking the tag number of tagging if it not registered yet
-Location of the nests in the morning hours
-Measuring the nests temperature during the hatching period
-10 days about after the last C. caretta has hatched the nest will be excavated so that the rate of successful hatching can be evaluated.
-Surveying other nesting beaches and monitoring of nests (by boat of Katelios Group or car)
-Removing litter from the nesting beaches
-Designed posters to help in promoting the protection of marine turtles C. caretta
-Distributing leaflets to inform locals and tourists
-Informing summer tourists at the local environmental information center located in the village of Katelios
-Approaching representatives of tourist companies in order to spread information to their customers visiting Kefalonia about C.caretta
-Leading workshops with young children carrying out games on the subject of the sea and marine life


Other day work includes( possibly )the surveying of known turtle nesting beaches on the island this generally takes a whole day as well as the surveying of male turtle behavior patterns normally undertaken in the afternoon and evening to tourists

Duration of the internship will be around 1 month.

The Katelios Group is a non-profit N.G.O and has been established in Kefalonia Island since 1993.The philosophy of the Katelios Group is the search for solutions co-existence between humans and the Nature through sustainable development in order to support both the economy from the natural environment and the preservation of quality of life in Kefalonia.The main objective of the Group according to the first Article of its Constitution is the conservation of the sea turtle (Caretta careta) in Mounta Bay and the research of coastal area and the habitats of the main nesting population. Katelios Environmental and Cultural Centre of marine life and history raise awareness.
