The republic of Latvia is one of the Baltic countries, in the northeast corner of Europe. The population of the country is about 2 million. In the north, the country is bordered by Estonia, in the east by Russia and Belarus and in the south by Lithuania. The capital city, Riga, is also the biggest city in the Baltic countries with some 700,000 inhabitants.

Latvia was under Soviet influence during the cold war and got its independence back in 1989 when the Soviet union collapsed. Before that, the history of the country stretches all the way back to the 12th century.
